Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is the original American ghost story — a tale of a superstitious schoolteacher, a rival suitor, and a headless horseman thundering through the fog of a Hudson Valley autumn. First published in 1820, it has shaped the mythology of American folklore ever since, and it remains one of the most purely atmospheric pieces of short fiction in the language.

This typeset is based on the 1928 illustrated edition, with artwork by Arthur Rackham — one of the defining illustrators of the golden age of children’s books, whose spidery trees, glowing lanterns, and half-glimpsed figures are perfectly matched to Irving’s uneasy, dreamlike prose. Rackham was in his sixties when he made these images, and they show a lifetime of craft: full-colour plates alongside pen-and-ink drawings that seem to grow organically out of the text. This was one of his finest late commissions.

The typeset runs to 96 pages across six sections of four folios each — a satisfying size that rewards careful binding. Your purchase includes two versions: one with Rackham’s illustrations embedded throughout the text, and one with the images supplied separately for tipping in on heavier paper stock of your own choosing. Both are print-ready.

Irving’s story is long in the public domain. The work here is in the preparation — the typesetting, the layout, the decisions that make a page comfortable to read and a book pleasant to hold.
