Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven is one of the most famous poems in the English language — eighteen stanzas of mounting dread, built around a grieving man and a bird that will not leave. First published in 1845, it made Poe famous overnight, and it has never loosened its grip on the imagination since.
This typeset is based on the celebrated 1884 illustrated edition, and it is far more than the poem alone. It includes all of Gustave Doré’s extraordinary engravings — among the last major works the artist completed before his death — which bring a gothic grandeur to the text that no other illustrator has matched before or since. It also includes Edmund C. Stedman’s extended critical commentary, which gives the poem its full literary and biographical context. The result is a proper book: 84 pages across six sections, with the poem, the plates, and the scholarship all in one place.
All illustrations are of high quality, reworked from the old editions.
Your purchase includes two versions: one with the Doré illustrations embedded directly in the text, and one with the images supplied separately, sized for tipping in on heavier paper stock of your choice. Both are print-ready and laid out to bind well at this page count.
Poe’s words and Doré’s images are long in the public domain. What you are buying is the work of making this edition print-ready, so that you can go straight to the part that matters: making the book.
